The beautiful city of Nice

Flower market Nice

I had been in Nice, over ten years ago, with some friends and just for a couple of hours. The only thing I remember? The beautiful shades of blue of the sea, I had never seen anything like that. Fourteen years later, that sea took my heart again.

We spent the Carnival weekend there, it rained cats and dogs the whole time and the Carnival was canceled, but the city was full of tourists and people with costumes, so the mood was set, we were going to have a great weekend.

At the first glimpse at the old city I thought to myself that I never quite saw any other French city like this one. Then I found out that, apparently, 200 years ago Nice was part of what is Italy today. That was it, there was something Italian about the place, but then the market, the boulangeries, the beautiful old shops, everything else screamed French to me... Especially the delicious breakfast with the croissants and so many different kinds of bread. No, French don't eat only baguettes, they have a wonderful variety of breads in which you will want to indulge, believe me! Unfortunately, I didn't do my homework very well and we didn't eat anything else worth mentioning.

I always end up talking about food, isn't it? It's just that I love to eat and I'm Portuguese, we're always talking about food.

So, after a wonderful breakfast in the old town at Le Coin Quotidien, we visited the flower market, which, besides flowers sells fruit and vegetables, Marseille soaps, cheese, sausages, fish and jams. We enjoyed it so much that we went both Saturday and Sunday, because french markets are the prettiest!

Next to the Vieux Nice, there's a hill that is a must see, it's not difficult to go up and the views from up there are stunning, we could see the gorgeous sea and the entire city, and I shall remember you that it was raining. On a sunny day it must be even more beautiful and in the summer you can take a break from the hot sun since it's very green with several places to sit and rest.

By the time we reached the Port, it was raining a lot and it was lunch time, so we walked on the promenade next to the port, visited a small kind of antiques market called Les Puces de Nice and rushed to a restaurant. Hugo ate the famous tartar, raw minced meat in this case with onion and avocado. I'm not a fan, if you want I'll eat sushi for the rest of my life, but  raw meat, no thanks.

Since the rain was there to stay we decided to go visit the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, which is very worth it. Loved both permanent and temporary exhibitions. The entry is 10€ but includes like three museums or so. We used it to go visit Le Théâtre de la Photographie et de l’Image the next day, which is also very worth it, but I'll tell you about it another day.

When we left the Museum it stopped raining, finally, and we could enjoy a walk in the Albert I gardens towards the sea. There we found out, on an open air exhibition, that Nice used to have a beautiful casino/theatre on the sea, which was destroyed in WWII for the metal to produce arms! Make peace, not war! Amen!
We went several times to the Promenade des Anglais because I could not get sick of looking at that sea. Not only the color hypnotized me, but also the sound of the little stones rolling with the waves. There was something really nostalgic about such beautiful scenery meeting those gray clouds.

As I said before, due to the rain they canceled the Carnival parade, but not the Nice Carnival Run, which characterises by athletes running in costumes. Needless to say that watching Mitch Buchannon, Superman and Maya bee running together was one of the high moments of the day!

Nice is a great place to spend a few days, also because you can make some day tours, like for example to Mónaco, but if you only have a weekend, it's enough for a good overview of the city.

We will return on a sunny day, that's for sure!

Is there any other places as lovely as Nice in Côte D'Azur?
